Buyer’s remorse is quite common. Many people feel sad, let down or guilty after making a purchase. This is true for impulse purchases as well as those planned for some time. In certain cases, the remorse will be so strong that the item will be returned, even if it is in no way defective.
If you suffer from frequent buyer’s remorse, examining your feelings can teach you a lot about your spending personality and give you the tools you need to make better choices. Understanding why we buy and how it makes us feel afterward gives us insight into…

Health care reform legislation lost a significant court battle Monday when a U.S. District Court judge in Florida ruled that the entire Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is void after finding that the portion of the law that requires people to buy health insurance is unconstitutional.
CNBC reports the judge ruled that the law, which would require people to buy insurance or face a penalty starting in 2014, went too far. The judge wrote:
"Because the individual mandate is unconstitutional and not severable, the entire act must be declared void. This has been a difficult decision to reach,…

The winner of last week’s “No Excuses” Giveaway was commenter #35, Eric. Congratulations to Eric.
I’ll host another giveaway soon. Stay tuned.
Our thirteen year old recently asked me for some good books about investing. His savings account has recently reached a point where it makes sense for him to start learning about investing, and he’s obviously interested in doing so.
I started by giving him a copy of Stanley and Danko’s The Millionaire Next Door, which is an interesting and enjoyable read that emphasizes the importance of education, hard work, discipline, and frugality in financial success. He started the book last week and really seems to be enjoying it.
Over the weekend, I ran across a copy of Eric Tyson’s Investing…

Las Vegas is hardly the first destination to come to mind if you’re planning a romantic getaway — on a limited budget, at that — but if you can control the urge to gamble away your hard-earned savings while you’re there, you may be surprised.
Sin City has plenty to offer besides casinos, from entertainment to food, to very reasonably-priced luxury accomodations, that it’s worth considering it for your Valentine’s day travel plans even if that might require coast-to-coast travel. (And if things go well, there are so many wedding chapels… Well, let’s not get carried away.)…

The year is no longer new and novel. I’ve stopped accidentally writing “2010″ on my checks, though I still double-check the date before sealing envelopes. New Year’s resolutions often don’t last past the first month of the year, so it’s time to see how “average” I am — how much I am like the typical American who doesn’t stick to the lofty goals set at the beginning of the year. For the record, I don’t see dropping goals as a problem, because setting the goals, and thinking about the type of person you want to be or the accomplishments…

Reducing our energy expenses is a current focus for me. With the recent 50% jump in our propane heating expenses I've begun investing significant time in trying to reduce our heating expenses. Our home was built in 1994, and when we bought it 2 years ago I was initially shocked at how much it cost us to heat and cool the house.
Here is a list of energy saving steps that we have done so far on our home, they include:
repaired and improved the weatherstripping on exterior doors and windows
installing programmable thermostats
added outlet sealers and plugs to…

Last year I laid out some of the major purchases we were considering, then updated our progress throughout the year. It was an interesting way to track our progress and see if what we thought we'd buy was what we actually bought. So I thought I'd do the same this year. Here goes:
Vacations -- In addition to our annual trips (2) to see family, I could see us going on three vacations/trips. First, we're thinking of going to a "resort" in upper Michigan (indoor waterpark inside, skiing outside) sometime in February or March to celebrate my wife's birthday.…
