I lately received an e-mail from Reader Donald asking if I could do a immediate comparison in between You Need A Budget (YNAB) and Quicken. Getting lately used both to write a YNAB review and a Quicken 2010 review, I was familiar with both and could effortlessly share my ideas. To add a small colour to the discussion, which I hope you’ll join in on, is that Donald does his taxes utilizing TurboTax and the potentially seamless integration of Quicken and TurboTax “hobbles” him from purchasing YNAB. Also, he has but to get benefit of… Read the whole article...

On December 1st, Fidelity Investments made significant reductions to the management fees on the 529 college savings plans that they manage. From this AP article: Fees on indexed plans will be cut in half, while fees on actively managed and advisor-sold plans will be cut by a third, the firm said. Fidelity manages plans sold in Arizona, California, Delaware, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. The changes mean a family with $50,000 in an indexed portfolio might now pay $125 a year in fees, instead of $250, assuming the amount in the plan remained unchanged. Seven Secrets of Good Presentations

Over the last few months, I’ve given a small pile of presentations related to The Simple Dollar, my upcoming book, and other topics. Along the way, I’ve learned several things about what constitutes a good presentation and what constitutes a failure. Here are the seven key things I’ve learned, which you can take away to make your own presentations better. 1. Lots of words on the screen is bad. If you have a lot of words on the screen, people stop paying attention to what you’re saying and start reading the words on the screen. I suppose this is fine… Read the whole article...

How To Get A Low Interest Rate APR on Credit Card Debt

I’ve been getting a lot of stories of people struggling to get out of debt because of the recent How to Fight a Debt Collector series. They haven’t reached the point of fighting debt collectors yet and they want to keep it that way. If you’re in heavy credit card debt, the first thing you need to do is take stock of your financial situation and stop spending. You need to… Read the whole article...

Savings Account Interest Rate Updates

Still not much action in interest rate land, but here’s another update. Reward Checking Accounts These are checking accounts, usually through local credit unions, that pay a very high interest rate if you jump through some hoops each month. However, if you make a mistake you’ll forfeit virtually all your interest for that month, so it can be tricky. But for the very diligent, their rates are still averaging around 3-5% APY usually on balances up to $25,000. A current example is FAB&T Kasasa checking at 3.50% APY on up to $50k, which requires 10 check card purchases… Read the whole article...
