How to Charge Top Dollar for Your Freelance Services

Your Ad Here
As a freelancer, I’ve had to learn to negotiate. That’s not something I’ve ever been particularly good at.  In fact, I’m a self confessed negotiaphobic. Actually, put me across from someone in a game of Monopoly, and I’ll wheel and deal like you wouldn’t believe. But put me on the phone with a client, and I feel shy to set a price for my services. Because of that, I’ve spent far too much of my life doing jobs that didn’t pay me enough – and it was my own fault. How Do We Answer The Question: What Am I… Read the whole article...

The Simple Dollar Weekly Roundup: Sick Boy Edition

Thanks to many of you who wrote to me expressing well wishes for our infant son. He’s doing much better today. On Monday, he was very lethargic and didn’t want to do anything but cuddle with me. On Tuesday, he acted normal when he wasn’t sleeping, but he slept a lot. Today, he’s acting pretty much normal, except very hungry. He had eaten twice before 7:30 AM. Here are some personal finance articles of interest from around the ‘net. My Ketchup Taste-Test: Upset! Guess Which Brand Topped Heinz. The interesting thing is that if you compare most ketchups in the… Read the whole article...

13 Books Well Worth Reading: The Cream of the Book Review Crop

Every week, I review a different book on The Simple Dollar (those reviews appear on Sunday afternoons, for those who are new to the site). Over the years, that’s amounted to a lot of book reviews – 259 as of today. Here’s a full list of all of the books I’ve reviewed on The Simple Dollar. Obviously, I don’t currently own all of these books – 259 such books would overstuff a bookshelf. What I find myself doing instead is keeping them around for a bit to see if I return to them as any sort of reference, and if… Read the whole article...

The Simple Dollar Weekly Roundup: Rainy Days Edition

It’s raining outside. My children want to go to the park. That means it’s time to come up with an indoor solution. That means, of course, that it’s time for an elaborate blanket-and-chairs fort in the living room. Live Within My Means? How? It’s not too hard to live within your means if you just follow one rule: spend less than you earn. The hard decisions of what to cut are up to you. (@ studenomics) With perspective, it’s normal to feel an emotional attachment to your possessions For me, perspective was the real key to this. I’ve reached a… Read the whole article...

Getting Things Done: The Power of the Collection Habit

This is the eleventh entry in a fourteen part series discussing the time management classic Getting Things Done by David Allen. New entries in this series will appear on Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings through July 16. Allen concludes the book with three short chapters discussing the power of various aspects of the GTD system. This first one focuses on how powerful the collection habit really is. As Allen states it on page 225: When people with whom you interact notice that without fail you receive, process, and organize in an airtight manner the exchanges and agreements they have with… Read the whole article...

Why You Should Be Reinvesting Dividends

I’ve been investing in a few dividend stocks lately because savings account rates have been pretty abysmal. The prospect of earning a percent or two on my money is great for an emergency fund but lousy for anything long term. One of the important ideas behind dividend investing is that you should reinvest the dividends if you don’t need the income. Public companies offered dividend reinvestment plans, or DRIPs, that let you buy shares directly from them and have your dividends reinvested for free. Nowadays, many brokers offer this service for free and I take advantage of them. However,… Read the whole article...

$20 Lottery Scratch Off Tickets

Last week, as my beautiful wife was waiting in line at the supermarket checkout aisle, I wandered around. I don’t really appreciate waiting around for much of anything. It is a mixture of impatience, interest deficit, and boredom, but in the time between putting the groceries on the belt and taking our bags to leave, I usually wander around the front of the store. I appear at the piles of firewood, the coffee stand, some of the headlines on the newspapers, and I ended up searching at the cornucopia of scratch off lottery tickets in… Read the whole article...
