About a month in the prior, I celebrated my imminent departure from my former employer with a lunch with my co-workers. They’ve been investing the prior couple of weeks attempting to get by way of the yr-finish reporting period, and from what I spend attention to, I ought to be glad I left when I did. The Debate Between Debit Cards and Credit Cards

More than half of all card transactions are now being paid with debit cards rather than credit cards, according to the Nilson Report. The debate between debit cards and credit cards continues on.  Many people made the switch to debit cards in an effort to avoid racking up too much debt and to help manage their budget more efficiently. The problem with this theory is the costly expense of overdraft fees if you mistakenly overdraw your account – and the fact that you lose out on many benefits by not using credit cards. Check Your Federal Tax Refund Status

For years, I loved to get a tax refund. In fact, it seemed the only way I could save was by having extra withheld from my paycheck so that I’d get a big refund at the end of the year. Using this method, I was able to buy a new computer, a new bike, and all sorts of other toys. (But, of course, I was never smart enough to use the money to pay down debt.) I’m older and wiser now, and I prefer not to get a tax refund. I’d rather get my money up front so I… Read the whole article...

Seven Rational Things to Do When Financial Panic Hits

I originally included this email in the reader mailbag this morning, but my answer to Susan’s email (below) went on so long that I thought it warranted a post of its own. Yesterday my husband found out he has lost his job. We don’t know what to do. He was making $38,000 a year as an IT specialist. I make about $36,000 a year as a school teacher. We have about $10,000 in credit card debt spread across three cards and a $1,300 a month mortgage payment. We don’t have anything saved either other than some retirement account money. I… Read the whole article...

But when you are literally living from one paycheck to the next and trying to juggle the due dates for so many different bills, sometimes these painful late fees can seem completely unavoidable. Not only do late fees add to your mounding debt, but they also put you at risk of an increase in your credit card interest rates, because falling late on… Read the whole article...

My Bank Stole My Grocery Money

By Sierra Black Dear Wainwright Bank, You appear to have stolen my grocery money. I was surprised and alarmed to see, when I checked my bank balance this morning, that I had been charged $92.97 in overdraft fees. My statement clearly shows that no overdraft took place. I showed my bank statements to a manager at your Davis Sq branch and asked her to explain what had happened. Her explanation was long and convoluted. Ultimately she gave me to understand that: my bank statement is not an accurate reflection of the transactions on my account you don’t process any transactions… Read the whole article...
