Review: Financially Stupid People Are Everywhere

Every Sunday, The Simple Dollar reviews a personal finance book or other book of interest. The title of this book convinced me to pick it up at the library recently, but it was the introduction that caused me to actually take it home and give it a full read. The introduction, entitled “Life as a Sucker,” makes the case that society is stacked against individual financial success unless you already have a lot of capital. Almost every element of modern society and government works against you without a large bankroll in your hand with which to generate more money. In… Read the whole article...

Review: Psych Yourself Rich

Every Sunday, The Simple Dollar reviews a personal finance book or other book of interest. A couple years ago, Farnoosh Torabi wrote You’re So Money, I book I succinctly described by saying “this book pitches personal finance advice for consumerism addicts.” Nevertheless, I concluded that the book did offer some very solid advice to the crowd that would not allow their Gucci handbags to be pried from their cold, dead hands. Torabi’s follow-up book takes a decidedly different tack on the arena of personal finance, moving on to the idea that your personal mindset has a good deal to do… Read the whole article...

Review: Debt-Free U

Every Sunday, The Simple Dollar reviews a personal finance book or other book of interest. When I went to college back in the late 1990s, my school was pretty much selected for me due to the scholarships I received. I didn’t have any financial resources of my own to help me get into college, nor was the internet widely available and full of easy resources to learn more how to acquire them. In short, I was left with a decision that seemed pretty much made for me. Looking back, I realize that the decision was not as clear-cut as I… Read the whole article...

Review: The Joy of Less

Every Sunday, The Simple Dollar reviews a personal finance book or other book of interest. Over the last several years, I’ve begun to appreciate how much easier life is if you have less stuff. You spend less time and effort on maintenance. You spend less time and effort moving. You spend less time and effort organizing your stuff and cleaning. What you’re left with is more time and energy and financial resources to actually enjoy the experiences and things that matter to you. It’s much easier to find an hour to practice on the piano if I’m not spending all… Read the whole article...

Review: Who Can You Trust With Your Money?

Every Sunday, The Simple Dollar reviews a personal finance book or other book of interest. A while back, I wrote an article describing an utterly painful meeting my wife and I had with a financial advisor. That meeting was painful. It simply accelerated my souring on financial advisors, based on a long run of experiences where I was essentially treated as a “mark” for commissions and sales. Yet, there are times when a trustable financial advisor can be really useful: when we stumble into a windfall, for example. With so many salesmen out there (and a few purely incompetent folk,… Read the whole article...

Review: Better Groceries for Less Cash

Every Sunday, The Simple Dollar reviews a personal finance book or other book of interest. Better Groceries for Less Cash by Randall Putala has a subtitle that pretty clearly describes what you’ll find inside the covers: 101 Tested and Proven Ways to Save on Food. While organized into chapters, this fairly short book’s main purpose is to simply relate a lot of methods for saving money on food purchases. My wife and I already do a lot of things to reduce our grocery bill, from using grocery lists to making meal plans and clipping (some) coupons. Yet we still look… Read the whole article...

Review: The Little Book of Bulletproof Investing

Every Sunday, The Simple Dollar reviews a personal finance book or other book of interest. The Little Book of Bulletproof Investing by Ben Stein and Phil DeMuth is the most recent entry in the Wiley Little Books series and probably the most entertaining one, too. The first thing you’ll pick up from the book is a good deal of humor: while they treat the subject seriously, they don’t treat it as Serious Business. This actually makes the book a rather enjoyable read. The Little Book of Bulletproof Investing focuses, unsurprisingly, on a conservative investment philosophy that doesn’t focus on earning… Read the whole article...

The New Frugality by Chris Farrell

The New Frugality by Chris Farrell is a new personal finance book that discusses a growing trend in America towards frugality. As we claw our way out of the Great Recession, American families are going back to smarter and safer spending after a near decade at the buffet table of cheap credit. This isn’t a book with a million different ways to pinch a penny, it’s a book that seeks to teach you how to be smarter with your money in actionable ways. For most books, there’s usually one big idea followed by dozens of… Read the whole article...
