In December 2010, I left the day job where I had worked since 2002 to focus on Consumerism Commentary, the blog I started in 2003, and other related projects, without distraction from a nine-to-five day job. By that time, the revenue generated by my projects significantly exceeded my day job salary — including the value of my corporate benefits — and I had put my other fears to rest. I made the jump from employed individual to full-time business owner. I’ve been chronicling my thoughts and experiences with my newfound control over my life and time in the “Life… Read the whole article...

Does Money Really Buy Happiness?

"A large income is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of," the novelist Jane Austen once said. And, as it turns out, Austen may have been right — to an extent. For example, if I increase my salary from $35,000 to $75,000 per year, I would be able to save for retirement, afford my medical prescriptions without a great deal… Read the whole article...

401k Contribution Limits for 2010

When it comes to 401k contribution limits, or the combined total contribution you can make per year to all of your 401(k) plans including traditional 401(k) plan and Roth 401(k) plan, there are two rules that govern the maximum contribution amount. First is the percentage of your pay that your employer allows you to contribute. For example, if you make $40,000 per year and your employer allows up to 20% of your salary to be used for 401(k) contribution, then your maximum is $8,000. Second is the legal limit allowed by the IRS as shown below. 401(k) Maximum Contribution Limits… Read the whole article...

Will Replacing 401(k) Plans With Portable Pensions Fix Retirement Planning?

Over the weekend, I finally got around to reading this Time magazine article about Why It’s Time to Retire the 401(k) which has been getting some buzz. The author promotes bringing back what I call “portable pensions” to replace the employee-controlled 401(k) plan, which would guarantee say 50% of your last year’s salary for the rest of your life. Sounds nice, but how will it work, and who’ll pay for it? Take the Mr. Shively in the article, who is still working at 68. About 25 years ago, his employer dropped the pension and replaced it with a… Read the whole article...
