Things your boss won’t tell you
Your boss is the one who supervises your work, evaluates your compensation and performance, and gets to decide or, at the very least, recommends if you get to keep your job. So even if you consider him/her as a good friend, there are things that s/he will not say to you. Here are some of them:
“Yes, we are reading your emails… and your IMs.”
Companies, especially those in sensitive and highly regulated industries, tend to sniff their employees emails and IMs for suspicious exchanges of messages. And not only employers watch what their workers are doing, but also act on what they find; thus, a number of cases of sacked employees.
“You’re too old for this.”
Discriminating against the elderly is becoming a trend. In fact, a survey by the Center on Aging and Work at Boston College explains that roughly 25% of employers are reluctant to hire older workers. And during the recession, more older workers that were laid-off.
“I know when you’re faking the flu.”
Before making it on top, bosses were once employees too. So, your boss often knows when you’re just slacking off, sneaking out, job-hunting, or faking a sickness.
“Your kid? Your problem.”
Recent studies prove that women earn less than men – about 81 cents for every dollar. Unfortunately, most women experience the “mommy penalty”, as well. Moms’ capabilities to perform essential tasks are downplayed because bosses think that they’ll always be more concerned about their family than their careers.
“I’m your bestfriend…”
Most bosses choose to be discrete, but some bosses have obvious favorites. While being the boss’s pal comes with benefits, you still have to be cautious of your actions. In the end, you boss is a boss and will look after his/her benefit, as well as the company’s, over yours.
